Common Dental Emergencies
The following conditions are examples of dental emergencies, and should be treated by a dentist as soon as possible.
- Broken or Lost Filling
If you have a broken or lost filling, it's important to get to the dentist to have it repaired right away.
If left untreated, exposed tissue can cause you intense sensitivity or pain, and bacteria in your mouth can cause the tooth to deterioration further.
- Broken or Chipped Teeth
If a tooth cracks or breaks, it can become quite painful.
Even if there is no pain, it is best to get to the dentist as soon as possible to help prevent or reduce pain, and avoid tooth decay or infection of the inner pulp of the tooth.
- Knocked Out Tooth
If you have a knocked-out tooth, it's crucial that you get to the dentist within 30 minutes to an hour after it is knocked out.
If a knocked-out tooth is put back into place soon enough after it falls out, it may be able to re-attach to the jaw bone.
- Severe Toothache
Tooth pain caused by an injury (like a broken or cracked tooth) or severe oral infection (like a cavity or pulp infection) requires emergency care.
The pain may be either dull or sharp, but if it is consistent, and severe enough that you are unable to function effectively, get yourself to the dentist right away.
